Welcome Mike Stevens

Mike Stevens1

From training as a teacher, then becoming an apprentice in the print industry, to working in sales and management – Mike Stevens has found the perfect culmination of all his passions in his new role as the Print, Packaging, Sign & Journalism Manager at Competenz.

“When I heard about this position I thought ‘wow!’ This enables me to indulge my interest in education and teaching, bring in my relevant industry experience and have the management component.”

Mike started out his career training as a primary school teacher, going on to teach French at a private prep school in Cardiff, Wales.

On returning to New Zealand in the 1980s to continue his teaching career, Mike quickly learnt that finding a job was going to be tough, and that’s when he discovered the printing world.

“A family member suggested a pre-press printing apprenticeship,” says Mike. “This gave me a strong grounding in print production where I worked for a year after completing the apprenticeship.”

Mike was then offered a Technical Sales Representative role servicing the print industry selling equipment, plates, and chemistry products for AGFA.

During his 20 years at AGFA, Mike also set up and ran a demonstration suite (including digital cameras, scanners and commonly used industry software programmes such as Adobe PhotoShop), before becoming Business Manager and eventually the National Sales Manager.

Mike also worked at Canon looking after key accounts and most recently spent three years with the Currie Group selling HP Indigo digital offset presses and print finishing equipment.

Mike’s extensive career means he brings with him a wealth of valuable industry knowledge. Mike is taking over from John Cudby and will be looking after a team of four specialists in print, packaging, signmaking and journalism at Competenz.

“I’ve already been out and about meeting people, but I’m looking forward to meeting more employers and my own base of learners who I will be helping to gain the best start possible in their own careers.”
