Top Ref-Air apprentice awarded at IRHACE conference

Jeremy Aimers of McAlpine Hussman Ltd in Lower Hutt took out this year's Wallie Askew Workskills competition and the distinction of being New Zealand's top refrigeration and air conditioning apprentice for 2011. The Wallie Askew Workskills competition is held annually alongside the Institute of Refrigeration, Heating & Air Conditioning Engineers (IRHACE) annual conference, this year hosted in Rotorua on May 19 – 22. The competition vigorously tests the theoretical knowledge and practical skills of top refrigeration and air conditioning apprentices from all over the country. Competitors started their apprenticeships in 2008 or 2009 and had already completed their Year 3 block course, and they’re very close to becoming fully-qualified tradesmen in their own right. On day one Jeremy and his fellow competitors undertook a 5-hour theory exam with a small practical component. Day two was a 5-hour practical test where competitors had to fabricate a copper tube coil, install the coil into a refrigeration and air conditioning unit, and then commission the unit. Competenz representatives attended the industry conference and provided a Makita toolkit box as part of Jeremy’s overall winner’s prize package. The Wallie Askew competition seeks to encourage high standards of workmanship at all levels of industry, and to introduce refrigeration and air conditioning apprentices to the activities and fellowship of their industry association, the IRHACE institute. Congratulations to all of this year's competitors who all displayed very high standards of workmanship: Jeremy Aimers McAlpine Hussman Ltd, Lower Hutt Ben Barney Waitaki Refrigeration, Oamaru Rob Fraser Piersons Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Ltd, Christchurch Jason Price Advanced Air Conditioning Ltd, Auckland Scott Payton Polar Refrigeration 2000 Ltd, Nelson Blaid Gifkins Newland Refrigeration and Electrical Services Ltd, New Plymouth David Boys McAra Air Conditioning Ltd, Hamilton Scott Brodie Coldrite Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Hastings Pictured - this year's Wallie Askew Award winner Jeremy Aimers of McAlpine Hussman Ltd, Lower Hutt.
