Linking training to business success
In 2002, with no factory and no staff as yet, Jack Link’s New Zealand decided that one of the companies golden rules would be – ‘we are all open to learning.’
And since day one training has been a crucial ingredient at Jack Link’s. Having to establish a new factory and the team within it in such a short time frame, Jack Link’s accepted that not all staff would have the specific skills needed for the job.
“Team Leaders turned up when we opened saying ‘Great to be here, but what’s Beef Jerky?’ So investing from within was, and is, essential to ensuring long term business success,” says Martin Beever, Technical Training Manager at Jack Link’s.
And Martin finds that on-the-job in-house training techniques work for Jack Link’s. “With the tailored training comes increased understanding, and confidence has grown. With confidence comes efficiency, with efficiency productivity.”
And what’s interesting is that since 2002 Jack Link’s team size has not grown, yet year on year exports have steadily increased. Training, says Martin, is a contributing factor.

Still in her forties, Leah Snell is a mother of six and grandmother of seven, so it’s safe to say she’s extremely busy with a great many commitments on her hands. And that’s why completing her National Certificate in Food and Related Products Processing, Level 4 was such an achievement.
Having finished school early to raise her children, she takes immense pride in her recently completed qualification. “More than just a certificate on a wall” it represents recognition of all the hard work and commitment Leah has displayed in order for her to achieve her qualification. Balancing her job and family responsibilities was no small feat and it took incredible effort in order for her to be where she is today.
Her success is also a testament to her employer, Jack Link’s, and their commitment to training and staff growth.
Leah’s rise from a floor cleaner to her job now as a Team Leader demonstrates her company’s faith in her, and means she is one incredibly grateful employee who wants to repay that loyalty.
Leah believes there is no need to hire new staff when training adequately fills the skill gaps – an idea her employer clearly values too. She praises the company for the faith and trust they place in their employees, motivating her and others to grow. She advises everyone to “find a good company who will encourage you to learn, no matter your age.”
She also believes that you will not lose your job doing training, so why wouldn’t you participate in something that will benefit you in the long run?
The pearl of wisdom she would give to anyone looking into future training would be: no matter the position, there is always competition, so you need to have that “little bit extra” talent or determination if you want to be successful.
