Got a Trade? Got it Made!

got a trade got it made

Competenz is partnering up with four other ITOs to showcase a newly developed trade hub in the 2014 Careers Expos, aiming to raise the profile of careers in trades.

The ITO hub has been developed to create an engaging way to communicate the diversity of job opportunities available and the importance of trades in the New Zealand economy. Around 35,000 people are expected to attend this year.

Competenz is sharing the hub and combining resources with The Skills Organisation, the Building and Construction ITO, the Hairdressing ITO and the Infrastructure ITO. We aim to help address the skills gaps by communicating to young adults where the job opportunities are.

The Careers Expos provide a great face to face opportunity to showcase the many trades career options, provide tips for getting trade apprenticeships and for school leavers to identify the benefits of earning while they’re learning. There will be a series of interactive demonstrations from the ITOs, and Competenz will be hosting the Engineering, Baking and Butchery demos.

The ITOs are welcomed by the Careers Expo’s director Mark Gillard, ‘We are really positive about working with ITOs, it’s a big step to ensure the industry sectors are well represented at the events and we know it will be welcomed and supported by employers. Secondary school career advisers have been requesting more trade representation and business involvement and feedback to this initiative is already really positive.’

Competenz will be representing the following sectors:

  • Baking
  • Butchery
  • Engineering
  • Fire Protection
  • Food & Beverage
  • Forestry
  • Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning
  • Wood Manufacturing
  • Locksmithing
  • Manufacturing
  • Printing
  • Signmaking
  • Furniture
